This new primary school facility occupies a site area of 11,000m2 and initially required an extensive cut and fill exercise to accommodate the proposed levels of both the building and external works. Once this had been completed work commenced to construct the single and two storey building which included classrooms, a sports hall, kitchen and staff areas.

In terms of construction the walls were masonry with a steel frame element to the hall. The roof was timber construction with slate and photo-voltaic tiles. The roof to the central corridor has a glazed feature element and elsewhere the windows are a Velvac aluminium/timber composite system.

On completion of the main school building we negotiated with the client to provide a hexagonally shaped nursery facility on the same site.

Project Highlights

  • Large earthwork exercise
  • Coordination of a large number of specialist equipment providers
  • Extensive car parking and hard and soft landscaping scheme
  • Negotiated phase 2 nursery facility
  • Photo Voltaic tiles to roof to generate electricity on site
  • Stage system to hall area

Not only did this challenging project comprise the refurbishment of two Victorian industrial 4 and 5 storey buildings, it also included major new build works incorporating, a workshop block and four storey link block connecting the existing buildings, and the central hub area all within a confined town centre site.

The focal area of the central hub contains the striking varying degree pitch stainless steel trapezoidal roof and central roof light. The cedar ceiling with acoustic treatment behind provides a stunning feature to the large space contained within the split level internal area.

Although initially contracted to undertake Phase 2 of the works to provide a further education campus, we negotiated and were subsequently instructed by the client to carry out the phase 3 works which included amongst others a dance studio, music rooms and a catering facility for the end user The Christchurch University.

Project Highlights

  • Significant renovation works to existing Victorian industrial buildings
  • Trapezoidal stainless steel roof to hub
  • Feature aluminium powder coated screens, doors and curtain walling
  • Externally areas include new car park, courtyard and break out areas
  • Confined split level site with works being accessed from four levels and entrances around the site
  • Working closely with client’s Architect throughout the extensive design development stage

The two storey teaching block provided by this scheme comprised seven teaching spaces, a library, a hall and ancillary accommodation which was located on the site of an existing playground and horsa hut classrooms. Initially two of the four horsa huts were demolished which allowed us to set up our site compound area on part of the proposed car park and to commence substructure work on the teaching block. The new site entrance was also formed at this stage.

The teaching block designed by Clague Architect’s of Ashford has many interesting design features. At the front section of the building alongside Kings Road, which housed the library and classroom 1, the design followed closely that of the existing school with facing brick walls and plain tile roof. Behind this the remainder of the building is a contemporary design including cedar cladding, Sto coloured render panels and a zinc roof.

Project Highlights

  • Phased completion with close liaison with the school
  • Curved end to hall with conical roof
  • Steel frame and glulam beams to hall
  • Mezzanine and clerestory windows to first floor
  • Acoustic ceilings to hall and classrooms
  • Completed on budget

This scheme comprised two separate blocks, one a general teaching facility and the other a CDT block. The teaching block is two storey and incorporates classrooms and offices with two stairwells and a platform lift. The CDT block is both single and two storey and includes domestic science facilities.

Being fully operational this meant a close interface with the school and required segregated walkways to ensure the safety of pupils and staff alike. In addition the main entrance was maintained and reformed as part of the works.

The construction of the facilities comprised masonry, widespan beams, Trespa cladding, aluminium windows and curtain walling and a mixture of Sarnafil and standing seam roofs with aluminium parapet copings. The single storey section to the CDT block also featured a steel frame element.

Externally a new car park was formed and the existing road adjacent to the teaching block was widened and resurfaced.

Project Highlights

  • Close liaison with the school throughout the project
  • Foundation work undertaken around existing gas main prior to diversion to maintain programme
  • Segregated walkways formed during construction
  • Trespa cladding with curved section to office area
  • Refurbishment of main entrance part of the scheme
  • Science equipment provided as part of the scheme

This stand alone facility is sited on the existing playing field of Deal Parochial School. The main teaching space can be divided into two rooms by a specialist folding partition.

The traditionally constructed building has a facetted feature at one end. Other aspects of the project include external shutters to the facetted elevations and rooflights. The Douglas Fir timber trusses manufactured by our joinery division, Park Farm Joinery, are exposed giving an interesting feature internally.

The external works element comprises footpaths linking the building to the existing school.
