This landmark building provides a new sea sports centre with modern facilities for the Watersports Centre, the Lifeguards and the Rowing Club. The scheme which was funded by Sport England includes a new boat store and changing facilities at lower ground floor level and a new bar and restaurant at first floor level that provide stunning views across the port of Dover. Also at first floor level is a syndicate room that provides a flexible multi-function facility with the inclusion of a movable partition.

With the footprint of the building actually on the beach the foundations comprise a concrete raft constructed of waterproof concrete. The structure up to first floor level consists of an insitu concrete frame on top of which is a steel frame to the first floor.

Externally the building is clad with masonry, cedar boarding and powder coated aluminium curtain walling, windows and doors. The roof is a standing seam system with Baileys preformed feature eaves. In addition to the front of the building there is an exposed concrete feature balcony with stainless steel balustrading.

After months of gruelling training two Jenner rowing crews recently successfully completed the 36km channel row challenge.

Following the disappointment of the postponed attempt back in September of last year, the boats were eventually launched from Shakespeare Beach Dover at approximately 8.30am on 19th May and reached the French coastline approximately four hours later.

The two five man crews were novice rowers who joined the Dover Rowing Clubs ‘learn to row’ course in 2010, and have now become two of only approximately thirty crews to have successfully completed the challenge in modern history. They have been raising money for The Pilgrims Hospice who took such great care of their Site Manager Roy Newman during his brave battle with cancer last year. Should you wish to support their efforts donations can still be made online by visiting their fundraising page http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/Jenner.Any support that you are able to give would be very much appreciated.

The crew members would like to thank the pilots of the ‘CS&PS’ safety boats from Pedro Boats UK, and ‘The Dover Rowing Club’ for their training, the use of their facilities, and for providing such great support on the day of the challenge.

Jenner continues to maintain a healthy order book during the current difficult economic climate and is delighted to announce that it has been awarded the Newington Vision contract for Orbit Homes (2020) Ltd. Phase 1 of the scheme which comprises 21 houses and 6 apartments above a retail unit is part of a regeneration project that includes the remodelling of an existing roundabout and road layout. Works on the project are due to start this month and be completed by September 2012.

Initially demolition of the existing Stimpson House building was undertaken in January 2008. Although the scheme already had an existing planning consent a significant redesign process was undertaken to provide a more buildable and efficient scheme. In consultation with the local planners we also undertook to provide more aesthetically pleasing elevational treatments with sympathetic detailing to compliment the surrounding facades.

This together with changes in the local planning policy required us to manage the challenging process of incorporating these revisions within the constraints of the existing footprint of the site as part of a revised planning application.

The scheme itself comprises 140 flats, with 40 shared ownership units, 40 affordable rent units and 60 for sale units. The construction of the u-shaped layout of the buildings is a pre-insulated timber frame with a masonry façade. This is complimented with sliding sash windows, stucco render, and reconstituted Portland stone cornices and window surrounds.

Car parking within the scheme is facilitated by a reinforced concrete basement car park and flight deck with provision for 140 parking spaces.

Project Highlights

Largest construction project undertaken by Jenner

Management of the design process to achieve a revised planning approval

Extensive reinforced concrete basement and flight deck for car park works

Two 40m jib tower cranes required to distribute materials within the confined site

Gold Award received by the site management team at the 2009 Construction Safety South East safety awards

Scheme successfully completed on time, within budget and to an excellent standard

This new build residential development comprised a combination of 37 houses and flats together with associated external works, services and drainage on a former gas holder site.

The initial challenge on site was to remove the extensive foundations of the gas holders. The subsequent void from this exercise was then backfilled with imported fill material. During this process excavations were supervised by a specialist due to the fact that the location of the scheme was designated an ordinance site as a result of the extensive bomb damage in the area during the Second World War.

Once this work was completed construction of the dwellings comprised a highly efficient air-tight timber frame which was enveloped with a mixture of brickwork, and timber windows to the external skin of the timber frame and traditional tiles to the roof. Cycle stores and refuse stores constructed of masonry, featheredge boarding and kal-zip standing seam roofs, were located in front of both the houses and the flats.

Project highlights

Management of the design process to achieve planning approval

Project funded by Jenner until oversite stage was reached on site

Code level 3 achieved under the remit of the Code for Sustainable Homes

Renewable technologies incorporated such as photo-voltaics, air source heat pumps and gas savers

Development named Peto Close after Sir Samuel Morton Peto, who built the London, Chatham & Dover Railway which reached Folkestone in 1843, cementing the town’s role as a major cross-channel port.

Successful completion of deep drainage excavations to both foul and surface water drainage installations including separate pumping stations

Not only did this challenging project comprise the refurbishment of two Victorian industrial 4 and 5 storey buildings, it also included major new build works incorporating, a workshop block and four storey link block connecting the existing buildings, and the central hub area all within a confined town centre site.

The focal area of the central hub contains the striking varying degree pitch stainless steel trapezoidal roof and central roof light. The cedar ceiling with acoustic treatment behind provides a stunning feature to the large space contained within the split level internal area.

Although initially contracted to undertake Phase 2 of the works to provide a further education campus, we negotiated and were subsequently instructed by the client to carry out the phase 3 works which included amongst others a dance studio, music rooms and a catering facility for the end user The Christchurch University.

Project Highlights

Significant renovation works to existing Victorian industrial buildings

Trapezoidal stainless steel roof to hub

Feature aluminium powder coated screens, doors and curtain walling

Externally areas include new car park, courtyard and break out areas

Confined split level site with works being accessed from four levels and entrances around the site

Working closely with client’s Architect throughout the extensive design development stage
