This event was held last month and we are delighted to report that we received overall company and project specific recognition in several areas, an excellent achievement considering the number, scale and complexity of our schemes on site at any one time.

H&K Health and Safety Awards

Date: December 2019

As contract delivery teams are well aware, each of our sites receive a monthly inspection from external consultants H&K Safety Services, where we are evaluated against a wide range of health and safety and environmental criteria. Not only is this information reviewed internally, but it is also analysed by H&K to determine the top performing construction companies in Kent, at their annual awards seminar.

With scoring based on a range of key performance indicators and inspections held by highly-trained, experienced auditors, we are very proud to confirm our success as follows.

Principal Contractor of the Year - Silver award

With only 0.19% between us and the winner of this category, this is a justified reflection on the determination and consistent high safety standards exhibited by all involved, from the planning stages through to implementation and monitoring. This accolade was based on 199 site visits held throughout the year. In-fact this is 89 more visits than the winner was assessed on, suggesting that with this significantly higher volume of inspections and only a marginally lower score we have even more to be proud of!

Refurbishment Project – Gold award (Sail and Colour Loft, Chatham Dockyard)

With credit to Contract Manager - Bob Garlinge, Site Manager – Clinton Dunn and the rest of their team, we are very proud to receive the gold award in this category for our refurbishment of the first floor of this historical building dating back to 1723. Undertaken for the Kent Business School at the University of Kent, we carried out a fast-track, 20-week refurbishment with the other floors in the building remaining open to staff and students throughout the programme. This is a fantastic achievement in a live environment and with the restrictions of a listed building.

New Build Project (5 to 8 visits category) – Silver award (Coleridge Road, Dartford)

Accepted by Contract Manager, Steve Restall on behalf of his wider site team, including Simon Ward, Andy West and Martin MacDonald, in recognition of their delivery of this new-build scheme of 51 new homes. Health and safety was particularly challenging on this project with the new homes built over three neighbouring roads, in a densely populated area and in very close proximity to the adjacent residential properties, making them very worthy winners.

New Build Project (9+ visits category) – Gold award (Central Parade, Herne Bay)

A very pleasing result for this project to deliver 13 luxury apartments over 5-storeys, in a prominent seafront position, complicated with tight access to the rear of the site, a busy main road to the front and residential buildings on both sides. The project saw some shifts in management personnel over the programme, completed by Contract Manager Frank Slegg, demonstrating that despite these changes, robust health and safety procedures continued throughout the project duration.

Our health and safety performance is absolutely fundamental to the success of our project delivery and considerable work is undertaken behind the scenes and on site to ensure exemplary safety standards are maintained at all times. Congratulations to everyone involved in our health and safety management throughout the organisation, with particular recognition to the teams at Coleridge Road, Central Parade and the Sail and Colour Loft, each celebrated at this event.
